It’s getting old. Scott Walker is either breaking the law or lying as usual. Shall we flip a coin?

Nothing to see here if you’ve been watching Scott Walker closely. But in case you haven’t, I thought you’d like to know: Scott Walker is Wisconsin’s first sitting governor to set up a legal defense fund.

He says there’s nothing to see here folks because he’s not charged.

See the thing is, he can only create that defense fund legally if he IS charged for something.

Scott Walker said on March 10th, “I have today formed a legal fund to pay for the expenses incurred in cooperating with the inquiry”  - the inquiry being a John Doe investigation that has been in process for over 2 years and has resulted in 15 felony charges against six former staff members who worked with Walker during his stint as a Milwaukee County Executive.-source

Walker’s spokesperson Ciara Matthews said “We reiterate that Gov. Walker has been told that he is not a target of this investigation,” -source

OK. So he’s breaking the law to create the fund?  From a not-terribly-liberal news source :

Sheboygan Press “Wisconsin statutes forbid state government officials from seeking or obtaining contributions to a so-called defense fund to pay personal legal expenses, except for the transfer of campaign contributions to a defense fund for limited reasons allowed under the state’s campaign finance laws.

That exception is for government officials being investigated for or charged with a violation of either campaign finance laws or prohibited elections practices.”“

A techie question on #Walkergate

If Scott Walker’s former aide* Tim Russell created a private network using a 3G wireless router to hide communications within Walker’s County Executive office, as was recently alleged, did he compromise the security of all data in the office?

The criminal complaint against former Walker aide Kelly Rindfleisch** says the secret e-mail system was used for both “official and unofficial business”.

I began to think about this as I read about how easy it is to hack a 3G network. - source

And I’m wondering if compromising the security of the Milwaukee County IT system should bring on additional charges.

See page 14 of the criminal complaint for details on the hardware used in the secret network.
